Accessibility First: Creating a Native Mobile App for Veterans The VA Office of the CTO, along with its partners Ad Hoc and Digital Foundry, created a native mobile flagship app. This app makes it easy for Veterans to check the status of their benefits and complete simple, transactional interactions. The app was designed and developed with an “accessibility first” mindset, and we will talk in detail about how we built in accessibility every day during our design and development process.

Creating a Machine-Readable ACR Federal agencies face challenges in delivering accessible services to people with disabilities. Vendors submit accessibility conformance reports (ACR) to show that their products meet requirements. These ACR documents are a snapshot, rather than a continuous adherence to requirements.
Open Product Accessibility Template (OPAT) will develop a digital native accessibility compliance report. Based on Section 508 requirements, we will have machine-readable documentation. This will support better validation and automated accessibility testing.

Web Accessibility at the CFPB The CFPB maintains a large public-facing website at www.consumerfinance.gov. Its design and development team is tasked with ensuring Section 508 compliance so that its content is accessible to all, a challenge given the large number of pages and diversity of content. Breaking through Silos: Leverage Staff Creativity to Serve the Agency Mission The National Gallery of Art recently launched a large-scale project to make our website more accessible by drafting short descriptions of each of the approximately 200,000 images. Learn how we developed an onboarding process and flexible, scalable workflow that leverages the available time and interests of staff and volunteers. In addition to making the website more accessible, this project builds buy-in and builds capacity for more than one hundred colleagues associated with the institution.

Neurodiversity at Work: Creating Inclusive Work Futures Many people with neurological conditions such as autism spectrum disorder and dyslexia have exceptional skills, including in pattern recognition, memory, and mathematics. Yet they often struggle to fit the profiles sought by employers and estimates for unemployment for neurodivergent adults range as high as 80% to 85% (HBR 2017). While a growing number of companies are also refining HR processes to hire neurodiverse talent, there are many barriers and more work needs to be done. This panel will briefly discuss the needs for neurodiversity at work programs, what has worked, as well as, gaps and strategies for mainstreaming based on neurodiverse-led efforts as the future for creating holistic inclusive workplaces.

Moving from task based programs to a Safe, Accessible, Functional, Engaging (SAFE) work-life for federal staff with disabilities Most agencies provide accessibility and other services for staff with disabilities out of various offices, using individuals in many silos. Tasks are performed related to the person with a disability, but don’t necessarily consider the whole person and their range of needs. This presentation proposes a hopefully more effective, whole-person approach to all kinds of accessibility needs over an employee's work-span.

From 5,000 to 0: prioritizing documents for remediation There were over 5,000 documents on the Office of Natural Resources Revenue's (ONRR) primary website, onrr.gov. Almost none of them were Section 508 compliant for accessibility. We'll go over how we broke down the list into manageable chunks and prioritized the list. We used this prioritization to create a phased approach that got the most used documents accessible first.

Reframe and Reinforce: Using Lessons from Neuroscience to Improve Leadership Understanding and Support for Accessibility Metaphors have been used as powerful teaching tools throughout history because they link new concepts to concepts people already understand, reframing in a way that allows listeners to more easily learn. Today, neuroscientists call this "neural reuse," which is the theory that metaphors use the exact same neural circuits as the new, more difficult concept being shared. In other words, metaphors don't "dumb down" an idea - they help listeners more quickly understand difficult new concepts! By reframing accessibility issues through the use of metaphors, and then reinforcing these ideas over time, you can successfully engage your leadership and turn them into true Section 508 Evangelists!

What is the Current State of Audio Description in the US Federal Government? Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act requires that federal agencies use electronic and information technology that is accessible to people with disabilities. For video and multimedia projects, this means captioning for Deaf and hard-of-hearing persons. It also means audio description (AD) for persons who are blind or partially sighted. Learn all you need to know about AD and how you can make your media projects accessible in a cost effective manner.
